We Believe:

  • school should be an inspiring and joyous experience for all, especially students

  • teachers need and deserve academic freedom to perform their job well

  • school, and its related organizations, should be democratically run by members freely voicing a diversity of opinions

  • school staff work best as collaborators with shared goals

  • Peer Assisted Review in Berkeley has served harass and intimidate teachers, while not necessarily improving their practice

  • educators improve through healthy and unscripted collaboration

Our Actions

  • we take an active role in speaking out in support of our values

  • guide, support, and protect all staff and students through a variety of means

  • meet monthly in an informal setting where everyone is free to speak

  • share information through an email list

  • stay connected with sister groups locally and nationally

  • respect the confidentiality of anyone who contacts us

  • participate in nonviolent direct action for a variety of progressive campaigns

Our Goals:

  • strengthen democracy in BFT and BCCE, BUSD, and the City of Berkeley

  • transform BFT and BCCE from bureaucratic models into social movement unions

  • actively participate in the movement to support and defend high-quality public education along with other progressive economic, social, and environmental movements
